40 years of Pyramid Innovation and success yesterday, today and tomorrow

2025 marks a very special anniversary:
In 1985, four school friends founded the company,
from which today's Pyramid Computer GmbH emerged.
We are celebrating our birthday!

Since 1985 Pyramid has stood for innovative IT solutions and quality made in Germany!

What began as a small PC workshop in a garage has developed into a leading supplier of industrial PCs, servers, self-service terminals, touch PCs and touch monitors.

We offer a broad standard portfolio. In addition, as an OEM and ODM, we turn our customers' ideas into reality.

Our success is based on the commitment of our employees, the trust of our customers and the cooperation with our partners.

The wind of change blows constantly and relentlessly in the technology sector. We are proud that together we have mastered challenges, revolutionized technologies, set trends and shaped the industry.

Did you know that the first Linux multifunctional server for medium-sized companies was our BenHur in 1998?

In 2011, we brought the first 32" display with PCAP technology to market and in 2015 we commissioned the world's first automated production line for the optical bonding of large-format touchscreens.

The anniversary is an opportunity for us to look back on our history and look ahead. With passion and a spirit of innovation, we will continue to create sustainable and future-oriented solutions.

We invite you to celebrate our 40th anniversary with us! In the newsletter, on social media channels, at trade fair appearances and on this website, we look back on four exciting decades of IT history and present our technological visions for the near future.

40 years of Pyramid Milestones & constants

Join us on a journey through the important chapters of our company history - from the first products to the latest innovations - and find out more about the constants of our decades of success.

Yesterday and today - Chapter 1 From catalog to B2B portal: the medium changes, the philosophy remains!

August 12, 1981 marked the birth of the desktop PC: IBM presented the "5150" model, a compact Computer by the standards of the time. It marked the beginning of the triumphant advance of the multi-purpose computer for the office, school and home.

The founding fathers of Pyramid recognized the potential of the new hardware format and successfully met the growing demand: the price of a Pyramid PC in 1986 ranged from a reasonable DM 2,995 to an expensive DM 10,000, depending on the configuration.

The Pyramid of those days bear witness to the recipe that is still a key success factor for our company today: In addition to standardized solutions, Pyramid manufactures hardware that is perfectly tailored to the use cases of individual customers.

Pyramid Computer GmbH has been operating a B2B portal as a digital service for its customers since 2023.

This enables convenient 24/7 procurement for configurable standard systems and customer-specific items.

The portal contains IPCs, servers, workstations, touch monitors and touch PCs as well as kiosk systems from Pyramid Computer's standard portfolio. The systems can be adapted to the respective requirements before purchase using a configurator.

Existing customers also have the option of configuring and ordering their OEM products, which have been specially developed for them, in the B2B portal.

In addition, the portal provides customer-related documents, warehouse and consignment information as well as information on framework agreements (FCAs). Lot quantities of RVs can be called up via the portal.

Yesterday and today - Chapter 2 Design as a trademark and success factor

Over the course of our company history, we have been repeatedly honored with awards for the excellent design of our hardware. These show that we provide our customers with high-quality solutions that harmonize technology, function and form.

Our first design award was the prestigious iF Design Award. We received it in 1991 for the Waveline PC family. The devices were available in mini-tower and slimline format. The futuristic chassis contained a 286 processor in the entry-level model and a 486 processor in the top model. We shared the price with NeXT Computer Europe from Steve Jobs' group of companies.

Our most recent awards went to two self-service solutions. In 2020, our POLYTOUCH® FLEX 21.5 kiosk system won over the jury of the European Product Design Awards.

In 2021, our POLYTOUCH® NANO self-checkout terminal won one of the coveted Good Design Awards.

They are awarded by the Chicago Athenaeum and are among the most important awards for industrial and product design.

Design is more than just aesthetics: it plays a key role in determining how people understand and interact with technology. Especially with self-service terminals, which require intuitive usability for customers, design plays a decisive role. Clear user guidance, high-quality materials and an appealing design help to create trust and make use as efficient as possible.

Our design and development expertise also benefits customers who require tailor-made OEM and ODM solutions. Whether individual customization or a completely new concept - Pyramid combines technological excellence with unique design for brand-specific solutions with a unique selling proposition.

Yesterday and today - Chapter 3 PYRAMID as OEM & ODM

Pyramid Computer GmbH has been a reliable partner for OEM and ODM solutions in the IT hardware sector for over 40 years. We support our customers from the initial idea through the design and prototype phase to series production.

With extensive experience in the development and production of customized systems, we offer individual solutions for a wide range of industries. Our customers benefit from a high level of vertical integration, flexible production capacities, certified quality management and comprehensive services.

An important OEM customer in our company's history since 1998 has been the Agfa-Gevaert Group, then one of the largest European manufacturers of photographic films and laboratory equipment.

Our systems were used in laboratory technology for processing and transferring digital photos to analog photochemistry. As the devices were planned for 24-hour use and had to deliver high digitization performance, the high-performance and redundant Agfa D-LAB 1-3 system line was created. Protection against vibrations and aggressive chemicals were further challenges.

Over the years, we have supplied Agfa with several 1,000 units.

The combination of many years of expertise, innovative strength and an in-house development department makes Pyramid a strong partner for demanding projects even today.

Renowned customers trust in the quality and reliability of our OEM and ODM solutions "Made in Germany". These include a global technology group that has equipped its letter sorting systems with AKHET® Industrial server controls.

The systems are characterized by a modular design, i.e. the server variants that the customer requires for the various mail sorting systems can be assembled cost-effectively from one platform. With a depth of just 57 cm, the 4 U high 19" systems can be integrated into the tight control cabinet of the sorting machine. The dust filters can be changed during operation using a special device on the housing.

Yesterday and today - Chapter 4 Pyramid in research and science

Modern cluster computing was born in 1994 with NASA's Beowulf project. Instead of relying on expensive special hardware, Beowulf used commercially available PCs that were connected to each other via a network and computed together.

This innovation ushered in a new era in high-performance computing: High performance computing became accessible to universities, private research institutions and companies for the first time.

It is a milestone in our company's history that we have become a partner to national and international research institutions with our highly efficient and individually scalable HPC platforms and our many years of experience in Linux and networking.

Among others, the TU Hamburg, the Freiburg Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials, the Aachen University of Applied Sciences, the European Molecular Biology Laboratory and the Institut de Chimie des Surfaces et Interfaces relied on our technology and expertise.

In 2008, Pyramid achieved a globally acclaimed success. On May 22, ATLAS, the world's fastest supercomputer in the Gigabit Ethernet Interconnect category, went live at the Albert Einstein Institute in Hanover. The picture shows Prof. Dr. Bruce Allen and a network switch from ATLAS.

We have also had and continue to have customers from research and science beyond HPC. We currently support partners from the precision mechanics and optics industry and medical technology with industrial PCs and servers from the AKHET® and touch PCs of the faytech®. These are mostly OEM and ODM solutions.

AKHET® controls scanning electron microscopes in industry, high content screening platforms in life science research and laboratory machines for pre- and post-analytical procedures in hospitals.

A touch PC from faytech® enables precise image recording and live streaming in HD resolution in endoscopy.
